Day 1

  • Continue biting on the gauze piece for 30-60 minutes following your tooth removal procedure.
  • Do Not spit, rinse, suck (using a straw), smoke, drink carbonated or alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours.
  • Avoid sneezing or blowing your nose.

The goal is to keep the blood clot in the socket in place and prevent bleeding. This shall prevent a painful complication of “Dry Socket”.

Day 2

  • You may develop minor pain, swelling, bruising, limitation in opening or closing your mouth, pain in jaw or ear, sore throat.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, sucking, spitting, alcohol and smoking.
  • Take enough rest.

Observe these instructions for a Painless Recovery-

  1. Brush gently. A mouthwash or a gentle lukewarm salt water rinse can be used to freshen your mouth. Just let the fluid passively empty, avoid spitting.
  2. To relieve the discomfort, pain relieving medications can be taken as prescribed by the dentist.
  3. Swelling, if occurs, usually begins to diminish within 72 hours. Use cold compresses to the affected area for every 10 minutes for the first 24 hours to minimize the swelling. Call the dentist if there is no change.
  4. Some oozing of blood is considered normal for first 24 hours. In-case you experience excessive bleeding, apply a damp tea bag or a gauze pad with firm pressure on the area to subside the bleeding for 30-60 minutes and keep your head elevated. If the bleeding doesn’t subside, call the dentist.
  5. Take a soft diet for first three days. Avoid carbonated or alcoholic drinks. Spicy and hot edibles are not recommended for a better healing. Expect a bit of tenderness while chewing and pain in opening the jaw during the first few days.
  6. If you have received sutures, it is advised not to pull or disturb them. Please visit the dentist after a week for the suture removal.
  7. Take the prescribed medications regularly. Do not skip or stop the medicines without the dentist’s notice.

In case of any unusual disturbances, questions or any post-surgical problems, please call the dentist.
