The connection between mental health and oral health is a “two way street “. Psycological well being significantly influences oral hygiene habits, physiological responses, and even the success of dental treatments.

Stress and anxiety often manifest as physical symptoms in the oral cavity, sometimes without the person being consciously aware of them. BRUXISM [ NIGHT GRINDING] high level of cortisol and stress are primary triggers.

SIGNS OF NIGHT GRINDING/ BRUXISM:

  1. Flattened or fractured tooth surfaces.
  2. Increase tooth sensitivity due to enamel wear.
  3. Broken, Chipped or Fractured teeth.
  4. Discoloration of the teeth.
  5. Pain or clicking/popping sound of temporomandibular joint in front of the ear.
  6. Dry mouth because of adverse effects of medications used to treat depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
  7. Dental caries.
  8. White patches in the mouth.
  9. Burning sensations while chewing and eating.
  10. Difficulty in wearing dentures.

MANAGEMENT :

The management begins with a comprehensive professional assessment to identify the underlying clinical problem by 2D/3D radiographs to evaluate the extent of dental damage. Based on these findings, the clinician determines the necessary course of action, which may range from identifying teeth that require reversible procedures, such as the application of desensitizing dentin varnishes, low intensity LASER or root canal treatment.

To address muscle activity and pain, advanced interventions like Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) are utilized; this therapy stimulates cellular repair and reduces inflammation in the temporal muscles, effectively relaxing hyperactive masticatory muscles and improving mandibular range of motion. Additionally, the fabrication of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) splints plays a dual role in treatment. These splints provide a stable, neutral occlusal surface that allows the masticatory muscles to relax and the condyles to seat properly within the glenoid fossa, while also acting as a protective barrier to prevent tooth wear and redistributing vertical loading forces to relieve joint inflammation. Finally, a holistic approach is encouraged, incorporating yoga, meditation, and dietary changes, changes in brushing technique to manage stress and support long-term recovery.
